7 Ways To Keep Your Skin Hydrated In The Winter (Recommended By Professionals)
- Last updated: Jun 1, 2023
If you think parched, dry skin is part of life through the winter, think again. It may not seem like it. However, there is a way, many of them! To give your thirsty body and face some relief. Since, as you know, it is brutal out there.
As temperatures fall throughout the rainy months, the moisture in the air falls, also and this causes dry skin, says Rosemarie Ingleton. A New York based dermatologist.
We spoke to skin professionals to get their best approaches for looking and feeling like winter never happened. Here's the way to stay hydrated and soft around all season.
1. Spritz your skin on the move:
"Ingesting water-rich fruits and vegetables can help with dry skin, as they add hydration to all of your body's cells, but applying a moisturizing face mist is a more direct way to impact your skin. It’ll give instant relief,” says Dr. Ingleton.
Look for a mist containing glycerol, an ingredient that can help lock in humidity, and spray it on anytime your complexion wants quenching through the day. Try Burt's Bees Hydrating Facial Mist, an option that works on bare skin or over makeup.
2. Do not linger in the shower:
Taking a long, hot shower feels good when cold, but it will lead to even drier skin. It is best to keep batteries short and warm in the winter, states Dr. Ingleton. Once you hop out, she proposes doubling up on humidity by applying an intermediate layer of body oil followed by a rich body cream or lotion.
She explains that it is critical to do that while the skin is a bit moist to aid the moisturizers to penetrate.
3. Add a mask to your skincare combination:
A mask, such as Burt's Bees Hydrating Overnight Mask, is excellent for your skin and may serve as weekly that'll help you unwind. Consider itself care at a tube. Masks are helpful because they're occlusive, which means they forcefully introduce the hydrating ingredients into the skin, states Vivian Shi, a physician and assistant professor at the University of Arizona. A mask is similar to saran wrap, preventing things from heading out and pushing things in.
To turn the masking time into a calming experience, have a seat, then do some deep breathing for 10 minutes while the product is resting on your face.
4. Skin Cracked immediately:
There is a simple solution for feet and winter hands. I tell my patients to do what I predict sock and glove therapy. You get a set of white cotton socks, and white cotton gloves, thin ones like chauffeurs would usually use. Put on whatever thick moisturizer you like, then you wear your socks and your gloves to sleep, states Dr. Shi. Whenever you wake up, your palms and heels will feel softer.
5. Resist the urge to lick your lips:
We know it is so tempting but don't. When it is dry, you would like to lick your lips, but saliva has enzymes that break down lips further. It is a vicious cycle, explains Dr. Shi.
Instead, soothe lips with jagged and frequent application of moisturizing balm. The best advice I could give for hydrated lips would be to never have them go nude, says Dr. Shi. She recommends picking a product with sunscreen for protection.
Burt's Bees All-Weather SPF 15 Moisturizing Lip Balm gets the job done.
6. Maintain your legs covered:
Consider laying dresses and skirts aside till the temperatures go back up.
You are more vulnerable to the components when you are wearing pantyhose than when you are wearing jeans, so your skin gets drier. In case you've to wear hosiery daily for work, simply be more diligent with exfoliating your legs, says Dr. Shi.
It will assist in preventing gross dandruff, which could appear whenever you take off the hose.
7. Mist your room:
With the dry air of winter, radiator heating is a hydration zapper. If that is what is in your home, Place a humidifier in your bedroom to add moisture to the air, says Dr. Ingleton.
Your skin will thank you in the morning.
